Agrivoltaics is the use of solar panels raised over farmland crops at the correct angle to promote optimal crop growth and increase farm income from solar panel energy production.
A Mutually Beneficial Relationship
Many plants don’t require full sunlight throughout the day. When they have absorbed as much as they can, any additional sunlight dries out their soil requiring more water. In an Agrivoltaics solution, panels are placed at the correct angle to control the amount of sunlight reaching the plants for the optimal solution to keep them hydrated and cool.
The crops can benefit the panels as well. Plants take water from the ground and release it into the atmosphere through a process called "evapotranspiration". This helps the panels stay cool during the day, allowing them to produce energy more efficiently. Farm land is known to be one of the best locations for efficient solar power production.

SRECs2 is $80 per unit produced plus adders such as, farming, additional height for the system, reflective material, and other variable adders that can range from $120 to $215 depending on the type of farming and system. The wholesale price of the electric produced and sold to the grid will be between .03c per unit to .06c per unit.
Government Incentives
The Investment Tax Credit (ITC), also known as the Federal Solar Tax Credit, allows you to deduct 26% of most of the costs of the build from your federal taxes. You may qualify for utilizing part or all of the ITC towards the immediate costs of the system. This rate will decrease to 22% next year and to 10% the following year, so take full advantage now!
Qualifies for standard MACRS depreciation for 5 years.

Additional Details
- The whole process from design to build to PTO (Permission To Operate) should take approximately 6 to 9 months assuming all funding is received on time.
- Some pre build ground work for certain builds are also eligibile for the FITC and MACRS
- All equipment is purchased at the beginning of the project with available project funds.
- Fabrication begins as approvals and interconnections are being finalized.
- The whole farming and photovoltaic system is under the scrutiny and information gathering of Rutgers University for the state of New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) and Legislators.
